Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill has been home to Boston's elite and renowned residents.

Welcome to Beacon Hill

Beacon Hill has been home to Boston's elite and renowned residents since the early 19th Century. Previously, Beacon Hill housed a large warning light to warn residents of the British invasion. At the end of the 18th Century, a new Massachusetts State House was built where the beacon once stood. Soon after, six of Boston's wealthiest citizens purchased 18 acres of land surrounding the statehouse and created Beacon Hill, what may have been the country's first planned residential neighborhood.

Nestled between Boston Common and the Charles River Esplanade, Beacon Hill provides residents access to an array of outdoor recreation opportunities. Boston Common, one of the most loved recreational green spaces in the city, offers ample open space, ball fields, the Parkman bandstand, and the iconic Frog Pond. A local favorite, Frog Pond serves as a wading pool in the warm months and an ice-skating rink throughout the winter. On the opposite boundary of Beacon Hill is the Charles River Esplanade, home to Boston's favorite running trail. The Esplanade also features a playground, ball fields, tennis courts, a variety of watercraft rentals including sailboats, paddle boats, and kayaks, as well as community events and concerts in the Hatch Shell Oval.

In addition to its rich history and public green spaces, Beacon Hill offers antique shops and boutiques along Charles Street as well as acclaimed restaurants throughout. The neighborhood retains the community feels fostered by its founding residents. As Boston's first designated historical district, Beacon Hill exudes old-world appeal with its gas street lamps, brick rowhouses, historical mansions, and the cobblestones paving Acorn Street. This exclusive neighborhood is highly sought after due to its abundant recreation, easy shopping access, and established community presence.
