Charlestown

Charlestown is one of Boston’s oldest and most historic Boston neighborhoods.

Welcome to Charlestown

Established in the 1600s and nestled between the Charles and Mystic Rivers, Charlestown feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Boston. Yet, all that Boston has to offer is only a bridge away. With its own Main Street and town square, Charlestown reveals its history as a small New England town in its own right for over 200 years before annexation with Boston in 1947.

Charlestown is one of Boston’s oldest and most historic Boston neighborhoods. The Bunker Hill Monument, along with several other stops on the iconic Freedom Trail, is located in the area. The neighborhood’s brick-laid streets and stunningly preserved historic properties exude an old-world charm that is heightened under the soft glow of the gaslit street lamps.

Dining options in Charlestown are a delightful mix of quaint, traditional dining alongside trendy cafes and eateries. Charlestown is home to both Warren Tavern, the oldest tarn in the United States, as well as celebrity chef Todd English’s Olive and Fig restaurant. When residents seek to expand their options, they can head to adjacent Cambridge or the North End for a myriad of cuisine choices.

The majority of homes in Charlestown are located in historic properties. The brick row houses and traditional New England-style wood homes in Charlestown are reminiscent of colonial times. Although many of the neighborhood’s historic properties have been renovated with modern upgrades and amenities, single-family homes as well as condominiums are to be found within the housing market.
