South Boston

All of Boston’s neighborhoods are filled with history.

Welcome to South Boston

South Boston, known to locals as “Southie,” is a quintessential Boston residential neighborhood only steps away from the heart of downtown and offers something for everyone. Whether it's waterfront trails for joggers, the grassy lawns of Fort Independence for picnickers, or Pleasure Beach on Castle Island for beachgoers, Southie has become one of Boston’s most diverse and desirable neighborhoods for young professionals and families alike.

All of Boston’s neighborhoods are filled with history. However, it was in South Boston that George Washington forced the British troops to evacuate Boston. Washington set up cannons on Dorchester Heights and on March 17, 1776, also known as Evacuation Day, the British retreated to Nova Scotia. A monument commemorating the battle and Evacuation Day can be found at Thomas Park. The second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country, the annual event includes over ten thousand participants and hundreds of thousands of spectators.

South Boston is currently experiencing a surge of new dining options, including trendy gastro pubs, sushi restaurants, and chic brunch spots. However, Southie’s long-standing local pubs, sandwich shops, and pizzerias remain local favorites. At game time, whether it’s the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, or the Bruins, the bars and eateries fill up with friends and neighbors to boisterously celebrate the wins and grumble at any losses.

The real estate options in South Boston include apartments in converted historic brownstones and single-family homes as well as newly built apartment and condominium buildings, such as the eagerly anticipated Washington Village next to Andrew Square also the new residential and mixed-used developments coming to the Old Colony Ave corridor. The proximity to downtown Boston along with the myriad of available housing options make South Boston one of the fastest-growing neighborhoods in the city.
